Originally conceived in the late 1960s as an advanced supersonic jet trainer, the Jaguar matured into a capable strike aircraft. Operated by the RAF as a low level tactical attack aircraft, the Jaguar performed well during the first Gulf War and later saw active service over the Balkans. Based in West Germany during the height of the cold war the Jaguar’s role would have been to attack the Eastern Block’s airbases and other tactical targets at low level, streaking in fast across the battlefield and delivering blows to help cripple the Soviet Union’s ability to wage war. 2 Squadron RAF has a long and illustrious history, holding the claim to be the longest serving squadron using ‘heavier than air’ aircraft anywhere in the world. Operating the Jaguar for twelve years, the squadron then re-equipped with Tornados, which it continues to fly today.
Designed to meet a British requirement for an advanced supersonic jet trainer and a French requirement for an inexpensive trainer and light attack aircraft, the SEPECAT Jaguar first flew on September 8, 1968. Early in its development the trainer requirement was dropped and the Jaguar went on to become a capable close air support, tactical reconnaissance and strike aircraft. This swept-wing aircraft was one of the first Anglo-French military aircraft projects and was used heavily by the French Air Force, which didn't officially replace it as its main strike/attack aircraft until 2005. It also served the RAF until 2007. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Corgi's 1:72 scale Jaguars are constructed using very little plastic and feel surprisingly heavy. Both the fin and elevators are die-cast metal, a feature that is unusual in most similar models. Among the model's notable features are movable elevators that rotate in unison, simulated stainless-steel heat shielding around the engine exhaust and the separately applied v-shaped transparent lens cover on the nose camera. The snug-fitting large, metal landing gear installs quickly and easily for ground display. The mold allows for the single-seat and the long, slender two-seat trainer variants to be produced.
