In 1962, the Convair B-58 Hustler won the prestigious Bendix Trophy, showcasing its unmatched speed and performance. Piloted by Major Sidney J. Kubesch, Captain John Barrett, and Captain Gerard Williamson, the B-58 flew non-stop from Los Angeles to New York in just 2 hours and 1 minute, averaging over 1,214 mph. This record-breaking supersonic flight demonstrated the B-58's capabilities as the first operational bomber capable of sustained Mach 2 flight. The mission highlighted American airpower and strategic reach during the Cold War. The crew received the Bendix Trophy for their achievement, reinforcing the B-58's legacy in aviation history.
Calibre Wings' B-58 is the first diecast metal model of this aircraft to be produced in 1:72 scale. This first release also arrives in a beautiful collectors's wooden box that can be used to store and protect the model when not on display.
This model has a "washed" paint finish with panel line shading. To learn more, visit the Calibre Wings Youtube Channel.
Please note: Although Calibre Wings models typically include optional seated crew figures, we regret that this particular release does not include any.
Designed as a supersonic strategic medium-range bomber, the B-58 was first flown on November 11th, 1956. Convair applied much of the experience they had gained from developing delta-winged supersonic fighters to the design. A unique feature of the aircraft was the use of a jettisonable centerline pod which not only contained additional fuel for the aircraft but also housed the nuclear payload or specialized reconnaisance equipment. The Hustler became the United States' first operational supersonic bomber when it entered service in 1960 but was retired just 10 years later when Soviet missile technology canceled out any advantage the aircraft had over the exisiting B-52 fleet.
Calibre Wings' B-58 is a large and impressive model in 1:72 scale. It features hinged canopies that reveal highly detailed cockpit interiors, magnetically attached landing gear and ordnance as well as an adjustable metal display stand.
The Calibre Wings 1:72 range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft. Calibre Wings models are remarkably accurate replicas of their real life counterparts.
