Lieutenant Ira "Ike" Kepford was one of the most famous U.S. Navy Corsair aces of World War II, flying with VF-17, the "Jolly Rogers." Assigned to the F4U-1A Corsair, Kepford quickly distinguished himself in combat over the Solomon Islands in late 1943 and early 1944. Known for his aggressive flying style and precision marksmanship, he achieved 16 confirmed aerial victories, making him the Navy's top Corsair ace. His aircraft, marked "29," carried the distinctive Jolly Rogers skull-and-crossbones insignia that became legendary. Kepford's exploits not only boosted VF-17's reputation but also solidified the Corsair's fearsome combat record in the Pacific. Designed to meet a US Navy requirement for a single-seat carrier based fighter, the F4U was first flown on May 29th, 1940. This versatile aircraft saw service with both the Navy and Marine Corps in WW II and in the Korean War. During its lifetime, the Corsair underwent numerous improvements such as a lengthened fuselage, a high visibility bubble-top canopy and folding inverted gull wings that provided clearance for a large propeller.
