The 4th Fighter Wing is one of two on-call rapid response aerospace expeditionary wings in the U.S. Air Force and is the host unit at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina, a major Air Combat Command base. The wing is composed of 2 operational groups, the 4th Operational Group, flying the multi-role, all-weather F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft which are assigned to two operational and two training fighter squadrons; and the 23rd Fighter Group, based at Pop AFB, NC, which flies A-10s. This combination of 2 Operational Groups within an Air Force Wing is a rarity in Air Force organization.
On 1 October 1989, the 336th Tactical Fighter Squadron (336th TFS) achieved IOC and became the first operational F-15E squadron in the wing and in the Air Force.
When Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the 4th responded with the deployment of the 336th TFS on Aug. 9. During Operation Desert Storm, the 336th flew 1,088 combat missions. The unit dropped more than six-million pounds of bombs on Scud missile sites, bridges and airfields. Most of the missions were flown at night
In May 2000, aircraft and members of the 336th (Rocketeers) joined other ONW forces in actively patrolling the Iraqi northern no-fly zone. The Rocketeers flew more than 60 combat sorties and dropped more than 69,000 pounds of ordnance.
Designed to meet US Air Force requirements for an air superiority fighter to replace the F-4 Phantom, the F-15 Eagle first flew on July 27, 1972. Following reviews of proposals, the United States Air Force selected McDonnell Douglas's design in 1969 to meet the service's need for a dedicated air superiority fighter. Since entering service in 1976, it is among the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 victories and no losses in aerial combat, with the majority of the kills by the Israeli Air Force. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Dragon's F-15 series covers the early single and two-seat air-superiority fighter variants and the long-range ground attack "Strike Eagle", with conformal fuel tanks mounted along the engine intakes. The canopy can be configured for display in the open position revealing a detailed cockpit interior. The speed brake is also configurable for displayed in the deployed position. The thin cambered wings and twin vertical fins all feature hand paint strobe lights. The "dog-toothed" elevators rotate, and intricate exhaust and heat weathering detail surround the simulated titanium exhaust nozzles.
