Dragon Models 1:72 Warbirds 50301
Grumman F-14D Tomcat Diecast Model
USN VX-9 Vampires, NAS Point Mugu, CA, 2003, w/3 Figures

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
Grumman F-14D Tomcat   10.25"   10.75"

Until recently, VX-9 "Vampires", a U.S. Navy Air Test and Evaluation Squadron, operated 11 F-14 Tomcats. However, after the retirement of the Tomcat throughout the Navy, the unit was still left with 28 aircraft at its base at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in California's Mojave Desert. This squadron was established in 1951 and it develops and evaluates operational and tactical tactics. Previously the squadron operated four F-14D Tomcats, and one of these is commemorated in a Warbirds replica from Dragon.

The F-14D was the final incarnation of the Tomcat, its engines replaced with GE F110-400 units similar to those of the F-14B. However, it also had newer digital avionics and the later APG-71 radar. In all, just 37 new F-14D aircraft were produced and 18 F-14As were upgraded, making it one of the least common Tomcat variants. This 1/72 scale miniature is nicknamed "Vandy One", and it beautifully encapsulates the sleek lines of this famous fighter. Strict quality assurance from Dragon's production lines means this model is finely finished, complete with its unique markings and the VX-9 tail code. But that's not all! This model is made even more desirable with the inclusion of a display base and a set of three well-sculpted crewmen. This means the presentation is attractive and instant – simply remove the packaging and the diorama is ready for immediate display! The Tomcat's heyday in active service may be over, but this collector's item gives it a welcome lease of life.

Grumman F-14D Tomcat

Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed "Bombcat," the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system.
