Dragon Models 1:144 Warbirds 51012
Boeing B-29 Superfortress Display Model
USAAF 509th Composite Group, "Bocks Car", USAF Museum, Dayton, OH

1:144 Scale   Length   Width
Boeing B-29 Superfortress   8.25"   11.75"

The National Museum of the United States Air Force, the largest military aviation museum in the world, is located near Dayton, Ohio. One of its larger exhibits is a B-29 Superfortress 99 feet long and with a wingspan of 141 feet. However, this bomber is not just any ordinary B-29, for it is the very aircraft that dropped the "Fat Man" atomic bomb over Nagasaki on 9 August 1945, the second such attack on Japan. The aircraft bears the name "Bocks Car", a pun on the commander's name, Captain Frederick Bock, and "boxcar". This B-29 was one of 15 specially modified "Silverplate" bombers assigned to the 509th Composite Group. Armor and some MG turrets were removed to allow heavy atomic bombs to be carried over longer distances.

Dragon Warbirds has released an impressive 1/144 scale model of "Bocks Car". The aircraft is cleanly molded and great care has been lavished on the painting and markings to get them precise. However, it's the model aircraft's dioramic scene that really makes it stand out from the crowd. The model is presented on a base and backdrop representing the National Museum of the USAF! Even the authentically scaled museum railings are reproduced by a sophisticated new tooling. The scaled-down information board in front of the aircraft is also set up exactly like that in the museum. This is a novel and visually stimulating item, an ideal way to present this historically significant B-29 aircraft. Now you don't have to travel all the way to Dayton to see "Bocks Car", for this museum exhibit can be set up right in your own home!

Please note: Unlike other models in the Dragon Warbirds 1:144 series, this model is made from a combination of diecast metal and plastic components.

Boeing B-29 Superfortress

Designed to meet an American need for a very heavy, long range bomber, the B-29 Superfortress was first flown on September 21st, 1942. The USAAF's intent in building the B-29 was to have an aircraft that was capable of winning the war through sheer destructive power-by destroying the enemy homeland. This mid-wing bomber had four 3,500 horsepower Pratt & Whitney engines. It required a crew of 10 specialists and gunners and had a sophisticated weapons system that included guns mounted in electrically powered turrets in the dorsal, ventral and tail positions. The guns were operated by internal periscope systems.
