Pan American had originally intended to start scheduled service across the North Atlantic before Christmas of 1969, a mere 10 months after the successful maiden flight on 19 February 1969. But some irritating engine problems postponed this landmark date until 21 January 1970. Even on that fateful night, an overheating engine delayed the takee off of the intended "Clipper Young America", and fortunately, a back-up 747-121 was available. Pan Am "Clipper Victor", rechristened as "Clipper Young America", departed from JFK Airport in New York at 1:52am on 22 January, and reached London later that day. A new era in commercial aviation had begun.
Designed as a large capacity airliner and freight hauler, the 747 was first flown on February 9th, 1969. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
