The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was unquestionably the most famous and formidable bombing aircraft of the Second World War. During the War, these bombers were primarily used in the Pacific theater. The first Boeing B-29 bomber entered into service for the US Air Force in September 1943 and the last B-29 retired from service in September 1960. Over the years, a total of 1620 B-29 aircraft were built by Boeing at its Wichita, Kansas plant. Powered by four Wright R-3550 'Star-Engines', an enormous load of remotely controlled ammunition, fuel, bombs and a pressurized compartment for a crew of 13 could be carried as far as 6000 miles and as high as 30,000 feet at a maximum speed of 357 mph.
This 1/400 die cast miniature is an authentic replica of the Boeing B-29 bomber named Battlin' Beauty, which participated in the raid on the Burmese capital of Rangoon in December 1944. This completely new-tooled miniature depicts the Battlin' Beauty as it appeared in October 1944, wearing the historically accurate early-style CBI markings that consist of four nine-inch bands under a colored fin tip.
Designed to meet an American need for a very heavy, long range bomber, the B-29 Superfortress was first flown on September 21st, 1942. The USAAF's intent in building the B-29 was to have an aircraft that was capable of winning the war through sheer destructive power-by destroying the enemy homeland. This mid-wing bomber had four 3,500 horsepower Pratt & Whitney engines. It required a crew of 10 specialists and gunners and had a sophisticated weapons system that included guns mounted in electrically powered turrets in the dorsal, ventral and tail positions. The guns were operated by internal periscope systems. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
