Dragon Models 1:72 Armor Collector Series 60171-03
General Dynamics M1 Abrams Display Model
US Army 4th Infantry Div, Iraq, Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
General Dynamics M1 Abrams   5.25"   2"

In 2003, American forces led an attack on Saddam Hussein's Iraq. At the vanguard of the attack were the almost invincible M1 Abrams and robust M2 Bradleys. The armoured vehicles of Iraq's forces were rapidly knocked out of action when confronted by these powerful machines. Operation Iraqi Freedom consisted of the largest special operations force since the Vietnam War. While the vast majority of special operations forces were American, the United Kingdom and the Australian militaries also provided forces. In northern Iraq there was a significant special operations presence. Coalition personnel worked with Kurdish fighters against the regime. SOF helped bring in the 173rd Airborne Brigade, and marked and called in coalition air power on regime targets. Special operations forces were also responsible for attacking a number of specific targets such as airfields, weapons of mass destruction sites, and command and control headquarters. In the south, special operations personnel gave aid to conventional forces and did some of the work in the cities to help the Shi'ia elements.

General Dynamics M1 Abrams

General Dynamics delivered the first M1 Abrams to the U.S. Army in 1980. The Abrams is a full tracked, low profile land combat system possessing a high degree of armor protection, lethal firepower, maneuverability and agility. It is built primarily from sturdy rolled homogeneous armor steel plates, sandwiched around thicker protective material. Its four man crew is aided by an array of sensors that constantly monitor the tank's tilt, the turret's motion and any gusts of wind; a computer adjusts the gun accordingly to keep it aimed at its target. With this system, the M1 can take out other tanks while on the move.

Dragon's 1:72 scale M1 Abrams has the attractive, sleek low-profile of modern day tanks. Dragon has put a lot of thought into this model, which has a plastic-constructed 360 degree rotating low-profile turret with finely detailed molded hatches and welding beads. Care has also been taken with other details, including the open equipment storage area, engine air intake filters, pivoting main gun, .50 caliber machine guns and 7.62mm machine mounts. The top portion of the hull and side skirts are constructed of diecast metal, the tail lights are hand-painted and the underside features non-moving rubber tracks. Some releases also include a front-mounted mine plough.
