Dragon Models 1:72 Armor Collector Series 60337
Hanomag Sd.Kfz.251 Schutzenpanzerwagen Display Model
German Army PzGrenDiv LAH, Kursk, USSR, 1943

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
Hanomag Sd.Kfz.251 Schutzenpanzerwagen   3.25"   1.25"

The Battle of Kursk, given the codename Operation Citadel by Germany, remains the largest tank battle in history. Beginning on July 5 1943, massed German armored forces sought a breakthrough of Russian lines in the vicinity of the city of Kursk. The LSSAH Division, an elite German unit, was part of 4.Panzer-Armee tasked with breaching the southern part of the Russian salient. The Leibstandarte division managed to advance against an elaborate system of antitank guns and defenses before it was eventually stalled on 12 July when confronted by no less than two Russian tank corps.

Dragon Armor has issued a superb 1/72 scale model of one of the LSSAH Division's armored vehicles. It is an Sd.Kfz. 251/10 halftrack, this particular Ausf.C variant coming from the first major production series, though it was more complex to build compared to the subsequent Ausf.D. The 251/10 was issued to platoon commanders, and featured a 3.7cm PaK 36 cannon useful for giving a light antitank capability. In this fine new model, the fully detailed antitank gun is carefully fitted with its low-profile shield onto the halftrack. The open-topped model has a full interior, while its exterior has received an interesting two-color camouflage scheme of yellow sand applied over its original gray. This pattern is ideal for concealment in the grassy steppes of the Kursk area as it carries forward its complement of panzergrenadiers pressing home their attack. This is a robust yet finely detailed model, and the fitting of the 3.7cm PaK gives it that little bit extra firepower in any model collection.

Hanomag Sd.Kfz.251 Schutzenpanzerwagen

Designed to meet a need for a vehicle that could safely transport infantry to the battlefield, the Sd.Kfz. 251 served Germany from 1939 to 1945. This half-track had a large track area and characteristic "slack track" design, with overlapping/interleaved main road wheels. It had an open top, which left the crew vulnerable to high explosive rounds and aircraft attack, but for practical purposes the design was so successful that it was produced in four models with no fewer than 23 variants. The "Hanomag" proved to be one of the most reliable half-tracks of the war and a total of 15,252 were built.

Dragon's 1:72 scale Sd.Kfz.251/7 Half-Track series includes the "C" and the final production "D" variants. The vehicle's open crew compartment provides a clear view of a fully rendered fighting compartment. The driver's controls and instrumentation are wonderfully detailed, with simulated wood plank benches stocked with rifles behind in the rear compartment. Each release captures the variety of forward mounted weapons, and some feature twin bridge sections atop the hull. The rear machine gun is mounted to a rotating anti-aircraft mount. The highly detailed front wheel steering linkages and track systems are mounted to a detailed diecast metal chassis to give the model a pleasing weight and robustness.
