The heavy tank battalion, s.Pz.Abt.507 (schwere Panzer-Abteilung 507), was created on 23 September 1943 in the Vienna area. It was completely equipped with mighty Tiger I tanks before the unit deployed into the cauldron of combat on the Eastern Front, including hard battles at Tarnapol, Vitebsk and Narev, in early 1944. By March 1944, the unit’s Tiger Is were fighting in the Lemberg area of southern Poland. This battalion, like every other s.Pz.Abt., could field 45 Tiger tanks when fully equipped. The tanks were assigned to three companies of 14 vehicles each, with three more tanks in the HQ.
A new 1:72 scale model from Dragon Armor depicts a Mid-Production Tiger from s.Pz.Abt.507 as it appeared while the battalion was stationed in Poland. The model’s finished in an attractive two-color camouflage paint scheme that mimics to some degree the stripes of a tiger. Of special note is the realistically applied Zimmerit coating, which attains the standards achieved by master modelers. The distinctive “B” tactical markings on the turret stand out and give this tank real personality. Detail is delicate and full, including all the typical features of a Mid-Production variant. With its striped coat, this Dragon Armor model is ready to pounce on unsuspecting enemy prey!
Production of the Tiger began in August 1942, and by August 1944 1,355 of these tanks had been built. The 88mm main gun was the most powerful anti-tank gun in use by any army. The superior mobility of Allied tanks allowed them to attack from behind or from the side in the hope of taking a Tiger down. The influence of Tiger tanks on allied morale grew to almost mythical proportions, and was known as "Tigerphobia." Tigers destroyed tremendous amounts of enemy equipment and often just the sight of a Tiger would induce the Russian tankers to withdraw. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Dragon's 1:72 scale Tiger I is constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which helps highlight even the smallest details such as welding beads and intricate Zimmerit coatings (some releases). Each release spotlights an early, mid or late production version with subtle variations such as the replacement of the rubber rimmed road wheels with steel wheels. Intricately detailed air intake filters are included for tropical/desert theater releases. This model features a rotating turret, elevating cannon with a weathered and detailed muzzle break and forward machine gun. Separately applied tow cables, shovels and track repair gear provide the extra equipment needed in the battlefield.
