Dragon Models 1:35 Armor 61012
Morser Karl Display Model
German Army, "Loki", Eastern Front, 1941

1:35 Scale   Length   Width
Morser Karl   12.75"   3.5"

Originally ordered in June 1937, development of Germany's new self-propelled 60cm siege mortar was supervised by General Karl Becker. Thus, it's not surprising that the name "Karl" is often used to describe this particular Gerät 040 weapon! One prototype and six production versions of these 124-ton weapons were delivered between November 1940 and August 1941. They were fitted with a short-barreled 60cm L/8.44 mortar, and they saw combat service in such places as Lemberg and Sevastopol on the Eastern Front.

There has been a very strong response from collectors to Dragon's series of fully built-up 1/35 scale models, and the latest addition is a replica of the original Karl mortar system. In this case, bigger is better! Collectors will not fail to be impressed by the sheer size of this item, which appears in a standard German grey camouflage paint scheme. The giant vehicle is fully detailed with all the intricate components of the suspension, chassis, superstructure and mortar. The vehicle is shown in transport mode, where the suspension has been set higher position. For even greater interest, the huge mortar barrel can be elevated and depressed. Moreover, a true scale of ammo is included as bonus. This monster of a model has been well painted and weathered, and it is ready for immediate display. The original vehicles were able to hurl 2.17-ton projectiles, but this model from Dragon will equally cause jaws to drop with wonderment!

Morser Karl

Seven Morser Karl self-propelled siege howitzers were designed and built by Rheinmetall from November 1940 to August 1941. Due to General Karl Beckers leadership in the development of this gun, his men named the weapon after him. The 12-cylinder Daimler-Benz powerplant provided a Maximum speed of 6.2 miles per hour. The muzzle velocity was measured at 6,950 meters per ton and the entire gun was mounted to a thick massive baseplate to absorb the tremendous recoil. Only six of these hefty guns were ever produced and all saw action across the war's many fronts. Despite its size and available firepower, the Karl had not been decisive in any single engagement and the value of such a massive weapon was highly questionable.

Dragon's 1:35 scale Morser Karl is a large and fully-detailed model, which includes all the intricate components of the suspension, chassis, superstructure and mortar meticulously reproduced in miniature. The huge mortar barrel can be elevated and features working spring load recoil action. Operator controls such as the aiming mechanism and two large inline positioning wheels have been carefully recreated, and a huge shell has been included to provide a sense of the sheer scale of this weapon. Some releases feature the suspension raised for transport mode, and others show this weapon in the firing mode with the chassis lowered.
