The Panther was a tank fielded by Germany in World War II that served from mid-1943 to the end of the European war in 1945. It was intended as a counter to the T-34, and to replace the Panzer IV and III, though it served along with them and the heavy tanks until the end of the war. The Panther's excellent combination of firepower, mobility, and protection served as a benchmark for other nations' late war and immediate post-war tank designs and it is frequently regarded (along with the Soviet T-34 Tank) as the best tank design of World War II. Until 1944 it was designated as the Panzerkampfwagen V Panther and had the Ordnance inventory designation of Sd.Kfz. 171. On 27 February 1944, Hitler ordered that the Roman numeral V be deleted from the tank's designation.
Designed to replace to the PzKpfw IV, which had met its match in the new Soviet T-34, the Panzerkampfwagen V "Panther" series of heavy tanks were armed with powerful weapons and equally powerful armor protection. Thought by many to be the best German tank of WWII, the Panther featured a sloped armored turret with a long barrel 75mm main gun and an anti-aircraft 7.92mm machine gun. It was equipped with anti-magnetic paste to combat magnetic mines, and armor skirts offered further protection for the track system and crew. Dragon's 1:35 scale Panther "G" tanks live up to the extremely high standards set by Dragon's previous 1:35 scale releases. These models are constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which allows for the finest possible detail. Each model has a rotating turret with elevating cannon, a moveable forward machine gun, road wheel suspension, hull maintenance access covers, pivoting barrel support and opening commander's hatch. Individually applied battlefield equipment and tools are correctly stowed on the hull. The series includes early variants as well as late production models with altered engine deck layout, raised fan cover, new exhaust arrangement and a new mantlet design.
