The U.S. M10 Wolverine GMC, a WWII tank destroyer based on the M4 Sherman chassis with a 3-inch (76.2 mm) gun, featured an open-topped turret for reduced weight and enhanced mobility, excelling in countering enemy tanks. The U.S. 702nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, initially equipped with T70s (M18 Hellcats) and later re-equipped with M10s (and subsequently M36 Jacksons with 90 mm guns), landed at Omaha Beach on June 11, 1944. Trained to ambush enemy tanks via speed and firepower rather than heavy armor, the battalion played key roles in Normandy campaigns (including breakout and Mortain counter-offensive), the Falaise Pocket encirclement, and operations in Belgium and Germany (Siegfried Line, Ruhr and Rhine River crossings, reaching the Elbe). The M10 provided the battalion with a mobile, firepower-rich platform to effectively counter German armored threats during critical Allied European offensives. Designed to fulfill a new combined-arms doctrine that emphasized the need for infantry support and exploitation, the M10 tank destroyer first entered service in Tunisia in 1943. Called "Wolverine" by the British (a name that was never adopted by US soldiers), the M10 was lightly armored and therefore more maneuverable than a typical tank. Its powerful 3" M7 gun fired armor-piercing M79 shot, which made it an effective weapon against enemy tanks. Upon its debut it was capable of destroying most German tanks, but by 1944 the newer German Tiger and Panther proved too formidable for it, though it remained in service through the end of the war. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
