Much like the USAF Boeing E-3 Sentry, the A-50 serves as an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) acting as a flying command and control centre for guiding combat aircraft over the battlefield. The Russian Air Force is currently thought to have about 16 - 20 SDRLO (Long Range Detection System) aircraft in service, operating from their home base of Ivanovo Severny in Western Russia. During the 1991 Gulf War however, Russian A-50s flew frequent missions from bases in Ukraine to observe allied air operations.
Includes metal display stand.
Designed to replace the Tu-126 Moss, the A-50 is an early-warning derivative of the Ilyushin Il-76 transport and first flew in 1978. The airframe bristles with a vast array of antennas, the most notable of which is the saucer like radome mounted on pylons above the fuselage. This massive radar antenna spans almost 30 feet across and has a detection range of 250 miles. It can track up to 50 - 60 separate targets and guide 10 - 12 fighter aircraft simultaneously. The fuselage is packed with communication and control systems with consoles for 10 mission specialists. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Gaincorp's 1:130 scale A-50 commands attention from any angle. The wide bodied fuselage and upper wing section are constructed from diecast metal while the wing's underside, tail surfaces and radome are all made from plastic. This well-balanced model will sit firmly on its metal landing gear but is most impressive when mounted on the included metal display stand. The clear canopy features finely painted frame detail and provides a view of cockpit interior. Many surface details are reproduced on the wings, tail and radome in addition to a multitude of antennas that adorn the fuselage. Additional features include a hinged rudder and ailerons.
