Boeing 747SP, serial number 21962, was delivered to American Airlines as N601AA. It was part of American's SP fleet, designed for ultra-long-haul flights. On 9 April 1992, while taxiing at London Heathrow, N601AA struck an airbridge, sustaining minor damage but no injuries. That same year, in July 1992, it flew its final Heathrow-JFK service before being ferried to storage. By retirement, the aircraft had accumulated approximately 32,692 flight hours and 4,759 cycles. N601AA remains remembered as part of American Airlines' efforts to serve high-capacity, long-distance international markets in the 747SP era.
Known during development as the 747SB (short-body), the 747SP (special performance) was designed to meet a 1973 joint request from Pan American World Airways and Iran Air for a long-range, high-capacity airliner. The SP variant had a fuselage that was shortended by 47 feet while retaining the engines and fuel tank capacity, yeilding a higher speed and longer range than existing 747 variants. The 747SP first entered service with Pan Am in 1976 and in the years that followed, its record-setting range enabled Pan Am to offer the longest non-stop flights in the world, including New York - Tokyo, San Francisco - Hong Kong and Los Angeles - Sydney. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
