Saab 340B, serial number 389, was delivered new in 1996 to Simmons Airlines as N389AE for operation under the American Eagle banner. The aircraft quickly became a staple on short-haul regional routes, connecting smaller Midwestern and East Coast cities to American's major hubs. It wore the classic red, white, and blue American Eagle livery throughout its service. As American Eagle gradually shifted from turboprops to regional jets in the 2000s, N389AE saw declining use and was finally withdrawn from U.S. service in 2006. The aircraft later found a second life in Australia, becoming VH-ZRB with REX Airlines.
