On February 8th, 2020, the 916th ARW of Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina said "Goodbye" to their last Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft. The 916th ARW accepted its first KC-135R in October of 1995 and operated the KC-135R fleet for nearly 25 years. The 916th ARW began the transition to the new Boeing KC-46A Tanker with the arrival of the first of its type on June 12th, 2020.
Designed as an in-flight refueling tanker for the United States Air Force, the KC-135 was first flown in August 1956. It has played a crucial role in extending the range and endurance of U.S. and allied aircraft. Its primary mission is to refuel other aircraft in-flight, enabling them to operate over longer distances without the need to land for refueling. The aircraft is based on the Boeing 707 and has a distinctive appearance with its swept wings and a flying boom for refueling operations.
