The 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard operated the massive C-5A Galaxy for more than a decade, supporting global airlift missions from its base in Martinsburg. Gaining the type in 2006, the unit used the C-5A to transport outsized cargo, military vehicles, and humanitarian supplies worldwide. The wing participated in operations across the Middle East and supported contingency, disaster-relief, and aeromedical-evacuation missions. Although the C-5A gave the 167th unprecedented reach, maintenance demands and modernization shifts led to its retirement from the fleet, with the wing transitioning to the C-17A Globemaster III beginning in 2015. Designed to meet a USAF requirement for a heavy logistics transport, the C-5 was first flown on June 30th, 1968. The t-tail configuration provides unobstructed access to the large rear loading ramp which, in combination with the massive hinged nose, allows for "drive-through" loading and unloading of cargo. The C-5 is one of the largest military aircraft ever built and its cavernous cargo compartment measures 121 feet long by 19 feet wide and 13.5 feet high. This is in addition to an upper deck with seating for 73 passengers. Current versions of the aircraft are capable of lifting up to 270,000 lbs of cargo. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
