McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30, serial number 53556, was delivered to Japan Air System (JAS) in December 1997 as JA002D. Following JAS's merger into Japan Airlines (JAL) in April 2004, it joined JAL's MD-90 fleet. On 15 August 2010, JA002D experienced a right-engine fire warning during climb from Sendai to Fukuoka; the crew safely shut down the engine and returned to Sendai. The Japan Transport Safety Board determined a fractured bearing scavenge tube caused oil leakage and ignition, damaging the engine cowling without injuries. JAL retired its MD-90 fleet in March 2013, and JA002D was later transferred to Delta Air Lines as N942DN.
Designed as a stretched and more powerful MD-80, the MD-90 was first flown on February 22nd, 1993. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
