Boeing 747SP, serial number 21023, first flew on 25 September 1975 as Boeing's third 747SP (N247SP). After completing its demonstration and test program, it was sold to Pan Am in March, 1976 as N531PA "Clipper Freedom". Pan Am used N531PA on high-profile flights, including transpacific and Middle East services. During its introduction, the aircraft set a notable speed record flying from New York to Tokyo in 11 hours and 36 minutes on May 1, 1976. After Pan Am retired parts of its fleet, the aircraft moved through several operators, including United Airlines. N531PA was eventually withdrawn from service and later scrapped.
Known during development as the 747SB (short-body), the 747SP (special performance) was designed to meet a 1973 joint request from Pan American World Airways and Iran Air for a long-range, high-capacity airliner. The SP variant had a fuselage that was shortended by 47 feet while retaining the engines and fuel tank capacity, yeilding a higher speed and longer range than existing 747 variants. The 747SP first entered service with Pan Am in 1976 and in the years that followed, its record-setting range enabled Pan Am to offer the longest non-stop flights in the world, including New York - Tokyo, San Francisco - Hong Kong and Los Angeles - Sydney. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Gemini's 1:200 scale Boeing 747 is an exceptionally large and heavy model in this scale (over two pounds) and is constructed almost entirely of solid diecast metal. The extra wide-body fuselage, with its wonderfully sculpted nose section, features all around seamless construction with pad-printed windows and doors. The model is supported on an all metal fixed landing gear with soft rubber tires and a steerable nose wheel. The solid metal wings are constructed as a single unit, and then carefully fitted to the fuselage. They feature accurately replicated flap track fairings at the rear and free spinning highly detailed fan blades inside each engine nacelles.
