410 Night Fighter Squadron formed in Scotland on 30 June 1941, and remained in Great Britain until 22 September 1944, when they moved to France. The squadron disbanded on 9 June 1945 at an airbase in the Netherlands. The squadron reformed on 1 December 1948, at RCAF Station St. Hubert as 410 Fighter Squadron flying the Vampire. The squadron moved to England on 15 November 1951, then to 4 Wing Baden-Soellingen on 14 November 1954, and finally to 1 Wing Marville, France. The squadron was disbanded at Marville on 2 October 1956, and reformed at RCAF Station Uplands (Ottawa) on 1 November 1956 as 410 All Weather Fighter Squadron flying the CF-100. The squadron was again disbanded on 1 April 1964 and reformed at CFB Bagotville on 11 March 1968 as 410 All Weather Operational Training Squadron flying the CF-101. On 11 June 1982, the squadron moved to CFB Cold Lake and re-equipped with the CF-18 as 410 Tactical Fighter (Operational Training) Squadron.
The McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet is a Canadian Forces aircraft, based on the American F/A-18 Hornet. The most visible difference between a CF-18 and a US F-18 is the 600,000 candela night identification light. This spotlight is mounted in the gun loading door on the port side of the aircraft. Some CF-18s have the light temporarily removed, but the window is always in place. Also, the underside of the CF-18 features a painted "dummy canopy". This is intended to disorient and confuse an enemy pilot in air-to-air combat. Many features that made the F/A-18 suitable for naval carrier operations were also retained by the Canadian Forces, such as the robust landing gear, the arrestor hook, and wing-folding mechanisms, which proved useful when operating the fighters from smaller airfields such as those found in the Arctic.
Designed as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and as a complement to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978. Perhaps best known as the aircraft of the US Navy's Blue Angels, this carrier-capable, supersonic, all-weather fighter has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support. The F/A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or land bases and a single switch converts it from fighter to strike mode. During Operation Desert Storm, the F/A-18 proved that, on a single mission, one aircraft could serve as both fighter and a bomber. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Gemini's 1:72 scale F/A-18 series includes the single-seat F/A-18C, the two-seat F/A-18D Hornet and the more modern single-seat F/A-18E and two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet. Witty's has taken steps to make this model one of the finest on the market, and one of this mold's highlights is a correct hydraulic actuator, which supports a canopy that is made of very clear, thin plastic. Other details include movable elevators, a deployable speed brake that can be held open with the hinged hydraulic actuator, detailed landing gear struts, doors and wells, and independently hinged stabilators and rudders that remain firmly in place when adjusted.
