The 6th Fighter Squadron (Commando) was formed on 22nd September, 1944 flying the P-47D Thunderbolt and later the P-51 Mustang in India before deactivation in May, 1945. The unit was then reconstituted at Hurlburt Field, Florida in April 1962, this time flying the A-1E Skyraider. After upgrading to the A-1H Skyraider, the squadron was redesignated 6th Special Operations Squadron (6th SOS) and deployed to Vietnam in February, 1968. It was given a wide range of missions from close air support to search-and-rescue to forward air control.

Douglas A-1H Skyraider

Designed by Douglas' chief engineer Ed Heinemann, the A1 was first flown on March 18th, 1945. Used in Vietnam for close air support and for providing cover for combat rescue missions, the Skyraider was valued for its ability to devastate enemy ground targets. It had four 20-mm guns installed in the wings, and could be equipped with additional combinations of bombs, mines, gun pods and rockets. The Skyraider was large for a single-engine, single-seat low monoplane-its bigger-than-average fuselage had plenty of space for modification and could be used for carrying passengers, medical provisions or heavy cargo.

Gemini's 1:72 scale A-1 Skyraider is a high-quality model detailed with a generous amount of pad printing. Diecast metal is used for many features that are typically plastic on other models, such as the freely-spinning propeller, a pitot tube made from stiff, fine wire, metal machine guns and speed brakes that hinge on metal pins with sliding actuator pistons. Other details include individual exhaust stacks, a solid metal wing with separately-applied flap details, removable ordnance and two external fuel tanks. The rudder has metal hinges and the landing gear has features rarely seen in this scale, including brake caliper detail and separately molded actuator arms.
