The 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron is tasked with supporting and conducting operational testing for the B-52. The unit oversees the full spectrum of B-52 operational test programs and also manages the Nuclear Weapon System Evaluation Program for the Air-Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM).

Back in the late 1950s, NASA employed specialized NB-52A Stratofortresses as motherships to launch the hypersonic X-15 research aircraft. Nearly 70 years later, in 2024, the 40th TES honored those legendary test aircraft with a striking tribute. B-52H #61-0028, while retaining its modern overall dark gray scheme, was adorned with bold dayglo orange highlights on its forward fuselage, vertical stabilizer, wingtips, and engine nacelles - just like the iconic NASA NB-52s of the 1950s.

Please note: An optional display stand is available separately if you wish to display this model "in-flight".

Boeing B-52H Stratofortress

Designed to meet an Air Materiel Command requirement for a long-range, strategic bomber, the B-52 Stratofortress was first flown on April 15, 1952. First envisioned as a straight wing, six turboprop aircraft, the B-52 underwent a number of design changes before becoming the swept-wing, eight turbojet aircraft it is today. Originally built for Cold War era "deterrence" missions, this aircraft is capable of carrying nuclear weapons but in actual combat has only dropped conventional munitions. Its long service career has included Vietnam, the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan and Iraq, and it is expected to continue serving until at least 2040.
