In 1996 the Spanish Navy (Armada Espanola) received 8 new EAV-8B+ known as "Matador II+" in Spain. These are the Spanish version of the Harrier II Plus. The Matador II+'s were assembled in Spain by CASA and assigned to 9 Escuadrilla of the Aircraft Fleet of the Spanish Navy based in Rota (Cadiz) and operate from the aircraft carrier R11 "Principe de Asturias". These aircraft are used in a fighter attack role. Matador II+ VA.1B-25 was built as Serial #165029 build # E14/SP-02 and given the ID 01-915. In 2003 serial numbers also began to be marked on the aircraft as well as the individual aircraft codes.

BAe EAV-8B Matador II Plus

Designed to meet a NATO specification for a light tactical support fighter that was also capable of Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing (V/STOL), the Harrier first flew in 1960. This unique aircraft has the distinction of being the only successful V/STOL design out of the many that were put forth during the 1960s. There are four different versions of the Harrier, which uses thrust vectoring to achieve V/STOL: the first generation Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the Naval strike/air defense BAE Sea Harrier, the US AV-8B Harrier II variant and the British BAE Harrier II. The Harrier was produced between 1969 and 2003.
