This latest production run of the "White Swan", as this elegant aircraft is called in Russia, is named for Ilya Muromets, the most famous of three knights-errant of Russian legends from medieval times. All 16 currently operational TU-160s are stationed at the Engels-2 air base. Next to an extensive modernization program for the only Mach 2-capable strategic bomber, production of new airframes has recently restarted.
Designed as a heavy low-level penetration bomber, the Tu-160 was first flown in 1981. © Copyright 2003-2022 The Flying Mule, Inc.
