The 11th Bomber Squadron is one of the oldest airborne units in the United States. Established in June 1917, it was relocated to France as part of the American contingent in the First World War in the autumn of the same year. "Mr. Jiggs" was a well-known cartoon character created by an 11th Squadron officer and, now with a bomb under his arm, was adopted as the unit's coat of arms shortly after its deployment. Designed to meet an Air Materiel Command requirement for a long-range, strategic bomber, the B-52 Stratofortress was first flown on April 15, 1952. First envisioned as a straight wing, six turboprop aircraft, the B-52 underwent a number of design changes before becoming the swept-wing, eight turbojet aircraft it is today. Originally built for Cold War era "deterrence" missions, this aircraft is capable of carrying nuclear weapons but in actual combat has only dropped conventional munitions. Its long service career has included Vietnam, the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan and Iraq, and it is expected to continue serving until at least 2040. © Copyright 2003-2023 The Flying Mule, Inc.
