Of the 16 Tu-144 aircraft built, the sixth airframe (fourth in serial production) was delivered to Aeroflot at the end of 1974. The aircraft was modified at the beginning of 1976 and fitted with new Kolesov RD-36 engines, which generated 18 kN more thrust, i.e., a total of 4 x 196 kN. Trial flights tested operation, payload and fuel consumption, with the result that distances of over 6,000 kilometers were achieved at a cruising speed of Mach 2. More important, however, was the slightly lower fuel consumption. In 1977 the aircraft performed its first flights on the route between Moscow and the provincial capital of Khabarovsk in the far east of the vast Soviet Union. Flights in both directions averaged less than three and a half hours for the 6,300 kilometer route. Ultimately however, the Tu-144 project failed and Tu-144 CCCP-77105 was withdrawn from service in 1981 and parked at Moscow's Zhukovsky Airport before finally being scrapped in 1995.
