B-52G #58-0216 was part of the 42nd Bomber Wing at Loring Air Force Base in Maine. With the escalating conflict in Kuwait in 1990, some of the aircraft and personnel were transferred to the 4300th Provisional Bomb Wing. This unit operated out of Diego Garcia Island, located in the Indian Ocean, and took an active part in engaging Iraqi targets beginning in January 1991. As part of Operation Desert Storm, B-52Gs flew numerous missions by day and by night, dropping more than 25,000 metric tons of bombs. They also had an enormous psychological impact on the Iraqi army, with some of their missions even announced with leaflets. #0216 was finally decommissions in March 1994 and went to the famous "Aircraft Boneyard" , the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC) in Tucson, Arizona to be scrapped.

Boeing B-52G Stratofortress

Designed to meet an Air Materiel Command requirement for a long-range, strategic bomber, the B-52 Stratofortress was first flown on April 15, 1952. First envisioned as a straight wing, six turboprop aircraft, the B-52 underwent a number of design changes before becoming the swept-wing, eight turbojet aircraft it is today. Originally built for Cold War era "deterrence" missions, this aircraft is capable of carrying nuclear weapons but in actual combat has only dropped conventional munitions. Its long service career has included Vietnam, the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan and Iraq, and it is expected to continue serving until at least 2040.
