The 105th Military Airlift Group (MAG) of the New York Air National Guard operated the Lockheed C-5A Galaxy during the 1980s and 1990s. Several aircraft were painted in the standard MAC-era European I camouflage scheme - dark green, medium green, and gray - designed for concealment on the ground and during low-altitude operations. Based at Stewart ANGB, the 105th used these massive airlifters for strategic cargo missions around the globe. The unit's C-5As often featured subdued markings, including tail flashes identifying "New York" or the 105th insignia. These camouflaged Galaxies were a distinctive sight until replaced by newer aircraft in later years. Designed to meet a USAF requirement for a heavy logistics transport, the C-5 was first flown on June 30th, 1968. The t-tail configuration provides unobstructed access to the large rear loading ramp which, in combination with the massive hinged nose, allows for "drive-through" loading and unloading of cargo. The C-5 is one of the largest military aircraft ever built and its cavernous cargo compartment measures 121 feet long by 19 feet wide and 13.5 feet high.
