Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II, manufacturer serial number AR-1 and Royal Canadian Air Force serial 35A001, made Canada's first CF-35A flight on September 23, 2026, from the Lockheed Martin plant at Fort Worth, Texas. The roughly 90-minute sortie was flown in full RCAF markings with the bilingual "RCAF - ARC" titles and a low-visibility flag on the tails. Canada has been a program partner since 2002 and ordered up to 88 jets in 2023 to replace its CF-188 Hornets at Bagotville and Cold Lake. The first eight aircraft are to train Canadian pilots and technicians at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. Designed to meet the US Military's requirement for a multi-role Joint Strike Fighter, the F-35 was first flown on December 15, 2006. This single-seat fighter is one of the most advanced aircraft of our time, said to be four times more effective at air-to-air combat and eight times more effective at air-to-ground combat than any other existing aircraft. It uses a low-maintenance stealth technology, and some versions have an innovative Lift System, which gives the F-35 vertical take-off and landing capabilities. The US plans to buy a total of 2,443 F-35s at a cost of $323 billion, which makes the F-35 the most expensive defense program in history. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
