US Navy F-14D Tomcat AD164 served with VF-101 "Grim Reapers" at NAS Oceana, Virginia, during 2002. As the Navy's East Coast Fleet Replacement Squadron, VF-101 trained pilots and radar intercept officers for frontline Tomcat units while maintaining combat capable aircraft. The F-14D represented the ultimate Tomcat variant, combining powerful F110 engines with the APG-71 radar, digital avionics, improved electronic warfare systems, and advanced weapons capability. By 2002, VF-101 was also preparing crews for precision strike missions using LANTIRN targeting pods and guided weapons. AD164 carried the Grim Reapers' distinctive markings during the final years of Tomcat operations. Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed "Bombcat," the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
