September 2000, the Ukrainian Air Force operated MiG-23MLD fighters with the 894th Fighter Aviation Regiment. Based in western Ukraine, the regiment was one of several units that inherited MiG-23 aircraft following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The MiG-23MLD represented the most advanced fighter version of the Flogger family, featuring improved avionics, maneuverability, and air combat capability. During this period, the regiment focused on training, air defense readiness, and maintaining operational proficiency despite limited funding and reduced flying hours. The aircraft remained an important component of Ukraine's fighter force before eventual retirement from active service. Designed as a heavier, more powerful improvement on the MiG-21 Fishbed, the MiG 23 first flew on June 10, 1967. This fighter/bomber had variable-sweep wings and could achieve speeds greater than Mach 2. It was the first Soviet aircraft capable of firing "beyond-visual-range" missiles, and the first to have look-down/shoot-down radar. As one of the most successful military aircraft built during the Cold War, MiG-23s were produced in large numbers, with more than 5,000 coming off of the production lines.
