In the 1960s, the Soviet Air Force widely employed the MiG-17F as a frontline jet fighter, often armed with UB-16-57 rocket pods for ground-attack missions. The UB-16-57, a 16-tube 57mm rocket launcher, enabled the MiG-17F to strike armored vehicles, fortifications, and troop concentrations with rapid, concentrated fire. Coupled with its twin 23mm cannons, the aircraft could perform both air-to-air interception and close air support. Soviet pilots trained extensively in rocket employment and low-level attack tactics, maximizing the MiG-17F's maneuverability and versatility. This combination of speed, agility, and rocket firepower made it a key multirole fighter during the early Cold War.
Designed as an enhanced version of the MiG-15 jet fighter, the MiG-17 was first flown on January 13th, 1950. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
