Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17 Fresco, shown as Blue 99, flew with the 42nd Guards Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment of the Soviet Air Force, a Tannenberg Red Banner unit normally based at Zagan, Poland, with the 4th Tactical Air Army. During Operation Danube, the August 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, the regiment moved to Hradec Kralove airfield with forty MiG-17s and two MiG-15UTI trainers for close air support, alongside the 149th Fighter-Bomber Air Division headquarters. The subsonic MiG-17 was already obsolescent by 1968, but it gave the invasion force a large ground-attack fleet within easy range of the Czechoslovak border.
Designed as an enhanced version of the MiG-15 jet fighter, the MiG-17 was first flown on January 13th, 1950. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
