On September 13, 1987 Su-27 Flanker B (early Type) Red 36 from the 941st IAP V-PVO piloted by Senior Lieutenant Vassily Tsimbal intercepted the Norwegian P-3 Orion "602" flown by Lt. Salvesen and 9 crewmembers off the Kola Peninsula. Red 36 made three passes, each one bringing the two aircraft closer until the third encounter caused the Su-27's vertical stabilizer to hit the P-3 propeller tearing the Su-27 stabilizer tip off and sending a piece of the P-3 propeller into "602" causing decompression. Remarkably both aircraft safely returned to their bases. Designed by the Soviet Union to challenge the superiority of fourth generation US fighters such as the F-15 Eagle, the Su-27 was first flown on May 20, 1977. This one seat Mach-2 fighter had the Soviet Union's first operational fly-by-wire system. The aircraft is very large compared to the MiG-29, its closest Soviet counterpart, but it is built with a high percentage of titanium, which helps minimize its weight. It is exceptionally agile and is perhaps most famous for its "Cobra" maneuver, which is a short, sustained level flight at a 120 degree angle of attack, often performed at air shows. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
