In 2022, VFA-125 "Rough Raiders" continued its role as the U.S. Navy's fleet replacement squadron for the F-35C Lightning II, training new pilots and maintainers at NAS Lemoore. The squadron operated early-production F-35Cs equipped with the latest software blocks, focusing on carrier qualification, advanced tactics, and integration with air wings transitioning to fifth-generation capability. Throughout 2022, VFA-125 supported detachments to training ranges in California and Nevada, refining strike, EW, and networked warfare skills. Their work helped prepare deploying squadrons - such as VFA-147 and VFA-97 - for seamless carrier operations aboard the Navy's newest flattops, solidifying the F-35C's expanding operational role. Designed to meet the US Military's requirement for a multi-role Joint Strike Fighter, the F-35 was first flown on December 15, 2006. This single-seat fighter is one of the most advanced aircraft of our time, said to be four times more effective at air-to-air combat and eight times more effective at air-to-ground combat than any other existing aircraft. It uses a low-maintenance stealth technology, and some versions have an innovative Lift System, which gives the F-35 vertical take-off and landing capabilities. The US plans to buy a total of 2,443 F-35s at a cost of $323 billion, which makes the F-35 the most expensive defense program in history. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
