The Soviet Air Force's MiG-29 Fulcrum-A made its Western airshow debut at the 1988 Farnborough International Airshow, marking a milestone in East-West military aviation relations during the era of glasnost. Two frontline MiG-29s from Kubinka Air Base participated in the exhibition, with one aircraft on static display and the other performing a dramatic flying routine that captivated Western audiences. Pilots demonstrated the fighter's exceptional maneuverability through tight turns, rapid climbs, high-angle-of-attack passes, and the now-famous "tail slide" maneuver, highlighting capabilities that had previously been seen only behind the Iron Curtain. Farnborough 1988 provided NATO analysts and aviation enthusiasts with their first close look at the Soviet Union's newest frontline fighter, confirming the MiG-29 as a formidable counterpart to contemporary Western fighters such as the F-16 Fighting Falcon and F/A-18 Hornet. Designed to help the Soviet Union attain air superiority, the MiG-29 fighter was first flown on October 6th, 1977. The MiG-29, known as the "Fulcrum," has a high-mounted bubble canopy and twin jet engines with diagonal-shaped air intakes and large exhausts. Its tapered, swept-back wings and boom-mounted tail fins give it its classic look. Armed with medium and short-range missiles and unguided weapons for ground and sea-surface targets, the MiG-29's sight is a helmet-mounted system-the pilot chooses his targets by looking at them.
