The Austrian Air Force operates the Eurofighter Typhoon as its primary interceptor and air defense fighter. Austria acquired 15 Tranche 1 aircraft, with the first arriving at Zeltweg Air Base on July 12, 2007. The Typhoon replaced the Saab 35 Draken, following an interim period using leased F-5E Tiger IIs. Today, Austrian Eurofighters perform airspace surveillance, Quick Reaction Alert, interception, and air policing missions, protecting the country's neutral airspace. Powered by two EJ200 engines, the Typhoon combines excellent acceleration, supersonic performance, and maneuverability, making it well suited to Austria's demanding Alpine operating environment. Designed as part of a co-operative effort by Germany, Italy and the UK to produce an air superiority fighter, the Eurofighter was first flown on March 27th, 1994. The Eurofighter is a single-seat, twin-engine, agile combat aircraft used in air-to-air, air-to-ground and tactical reconnaissance roles. It is intentionally aerodynamically unstable, which gives it its high levels of agility-but this means the Typhoon is controlled by a computerized "fly by wire" system instead of by its pilot.
