Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 61 (WTD 61) is the Luftwaffe's premier test and evaluation unit, based in Manching, Germany. The unit specializes in assessing new aircraft, systems, and technologies to ensure their readiness for operational use. WTD 61 works with a variety of platforms, including Tornados, Eurofighters, and former East German aircraft like the Su-22. At the 2023 Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), WTD 61 showcased the Tornado IDS, a multi-role aircraft designed for deep strike and reconnaissance missions. Designed in collaboration with Britain, West Germany and Italy, the Tornado was first flown on August 14th, 1974 and is thought by many to be the most important military aircraft in Western European history. Nicknamed "The Flying Fin" because of its large tail fin, the Tornado has a variable wing sweep design and is capable of taking off and landing on short airstrips. It is equipped with terrain-following radar, which allows for hands-off, low-level flight in any weather.
