North American P-51B Mustang "Miss Sally III," coded WZ-T, was flown by Captain Murray D. McLaughlin of Basin, Wyoming, with the 309th Fighter Squadron, 31st Fighter Group, Fifteenth Air Force, in the Mediterranean. The group moved to the Fifteenth Air Force in March 1944 and traded its Spitfires for Mustangs, escorting heavy bombers to targets such as Ploesti and Vienna. McLaughlin became an ace on a Ploesti-area mission in May 1944, shooting down two Me 109s, and finished the war with seven victories. His squadron produced 15 aces and 173.75 victories, and the 31st was the top-scoring Allied fighter group in the theater. Designed to meet an RAF requirement for fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, the P-51 Mustang was first flown on October 26th, 1940. This versatile aircraft was capable of escorting bombers on long-range missions, engaging in dogfights, and dropping down to destroy German targets on the ground. At least eight versions of the P-51 were produced, but it was the definitive P-51D that gave the Mustang its classic warbird appearance. Britain and the US both tested the airframe with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, which gave the aircraft tremendous performance gains. The Truman Senate War Investigating Committee called the Mustang "the most aerodynamically perfect pursuit plane in existence." © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
