The Su-30MKM Blue 04 prototype appeared at MAKS 2007 as a major demonstration aircraft for Malaysia's new multirole fighter. Built by Irkut, Blue 04 showed the features that set the MKM apart: a modern glass cockpit, Western sourced avionics, laser and missile warning sensors, and thrust vectoring AL-31FP engines. During the 2007 show it performed tight turns, tail slides, and other post stall maneuvers to highlight its agility. The aircraft helped complete testing of the MKM's mixed systems and confirmed performance before deliveries to the Royal Malaysian Air Force. Blue 04 was a key step toward full production.
Designed as two-seat multi-role variant of the Su-27, the Su-30 was first flown (as the Su-27PU) on December 31, 1989. The design grew from a Soviet need for a long-range interceptor based on the Su-27 with the addition of a second pilot and retractable in-flight refuelling probe. Similar to the F-15E Strike Eagle, the Su-30 is still a highly capable Air Superiority Fighter while an advanced avionics suite make it formidable in the Air-to-Ground Strike Fighter role. The Su-30 has spawned numerous sub-variants, including several designed for the export market. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
