The Su-30SM2 Flanker-H entered Russian Naval Aviation service in January 2022, when Irkutsk-built aircraft Blue 78 to Blue 81 joined the Baltic Fleet's 4th Guards Naval Assault Aviation Regiment at Chernyakhovsk in the Kaliningrad exclave, replacing ageing Su-27s. A deep upgrade of the two-seat Su-30SM, the SM2 borrows the Su-35S's AL-41F-1S engines, Irbis-E radar and OLS-35 infrared search-and-track, along with Khibiny electronic countermeasures, giving the Navy a longer-ranged maritime strike and air-defence fighter. Blue 78 was reportedly seen tanking over the Mediterranean just before the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, and Blue 87 and 88 were intercepted by Italian Eurofighters over the Gulf of Finland while ferrying to Kaliningrad in November 2025.
Designed as two-seat multi-role variant of the Su-27, the Su-30 was first flown (as the Su-27PU) on December 31, 1989. The design grew from a Soviet need for a long-range interceptor based on the Su-27 with the addition of a second pilot and retractable in-flight refuelling probe. Similar to the F-15E Strike Eagle, the Su-30 is still a highly capable Air Superiority Fighter while an advanced avionics suite make it formidable in the Air-to-Ground Strike Fighter role. The Su-30 has spawned numerous sub-variants, including several designed for the export market. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
