In 2003, the Swiss Air Force retired the Mirage IIIRS, ending decades of service with the Mirage III family in Switzerland. The IIIRS was a dedicated reconnaissance variant equipped with cameras and sensors for tactical and strategic intelligence missions. Based at Buochs and other Swiss air bases, these aircraft conducted high speed photo reconnaissance in support of national defense. By the early 2000s, the fleet had become costly to maintain and was replaced by newer systems and upgraded F-5 and F/A-18 aircraft. The retirement marked the end of the Mirage era in Swiss service after more than 35 years. Designed to meet a French government specification for a lightweight, all-weather interceptor, the Dassault Mirage III was first flown on November 17, 1956. This supersonic aircraft has a tailless delta wing configuration and is capable of high speeds (a Mirage IIIA was the first European aircraft to exceed Mach 2 in level flight). It has a provision for a SEPR liquid-fuel rocket engine, which provides additional burst thrust. In production for over a decade, the Mirage III is considered one of Europe's most successful military aircraft designs, serving 20 different nations, some of whom still fly it today. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
