In May and June 1942 the main objective of the German Army was to capture and hold Tobruk, Libya. In January 1941 the British forced an Italian retreat but reinforced by the Germans under the leadership of Rommel counterattacked but this was repelled. In May the Germans made another attempt to capture Tobruk and on June 21, 1942 Rommel succeeded. On November 13, 1942 the British once again captured Tobruk. The 15th Panzer Division was formed on November 1, 1940 arriving in North Africa in April 1942. On May 9, 1943 the 15th was destroyed.
The Leichter PanzerspƤhwagen was light-weight, four-wheel drive armoured reconnaissance vehicle. The vehicle was constructed by assembling an angled armour-plated body on top of a Horch 801 Heavy Car chassis, and adding an open turret that carried a 2cm KwK 30 L/55 autocannon as well as a 7.92mm MG34 machine gun. They type was used by reconnaissance battalions of the Panzer divisions and proved quite capable on the paved roads of Western Europe. Unfortunately, its performance was found to be inadquate for off-road use in the Eastern Front and Northern Africa, where Half-Tracks proved more capable. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Hobby Master's 1:48 scale Leichter Panzerspahwagen is constructed almost entirely in plastic for accurate replication of intricate details. The model's hull features separately applied equipment such as a spare tire, shovel and jack with fine scale tow hooks at the front and rear of the model. The fixed top turret can be configured with the simulated anti-grenade screen in the open or closed position. In the open position, details of the pivoting 2cm auto cannon are clearly visible. The model's underside reveals scale details of the vehicles drive train and suspension, such as simulated coiled springs on the wish-bone suspension and twin engine exhaust.
