A rapid build up of new Russian tanks started the USA to worry about a battle in Europe fighting thousands of Soviet tanks just like the T-55A. This concern sparked a fierce tank development race between the two countries and in the U.S. the development of the Attack Helicopter became a priority. The T-55 was sold to over 40 countries and came in numerous variants. The T-54/55 became the most produced tank series in history. A replacement for the aging T-34 was needed so the T-44 was created that evolved into the T-54 then in 1958 the T-55. From 1964 – 1979 under license from Russia, Poland built the T-55A. The T-55A retained the T-54 and T-55 improvements plus a few of its own, improved anti-radiation protection, improved NBC system and no bow MG. In 1970, after countless complaints a cupola was provided for the 12.7mm DShK anti-aircraft machine gun. Some estimate 95,000 - 130,000 T-54 and T-55 series tanks were manufactured.
Designed as a descendant of the Soviet Union's famous T-34 medium tank, the T-55 series of main battle tanks first entered service in 1959. This tank has a fully tracked, five-road-wheeled chassis with no space between the first and second road wheels and no return rollers. It combines a high-velocity gun, a highly mobile chassis, a low silhouette and exceptional long-range endurance. It can ford depths of 1.4 meters without preparation and 5.5 meters with snorkel equipment. Used by some 47 other nations on both sides of the Iron Curtain, the T-55 saw use with Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Hobby Master's 1:72 scale T-55 is constructed with an intelligent mix of diecast metal and plastic, which gives this model maximum scale replication. One of the highlights of this T-55 is an extraordinarily detailed turret, which is constructed of diecast metal combined with plastic components such as the separately-applied commander and gunner's hatches with scale rivets and hinges, the floodlights and the DShk 108mm heavy machine gun. The mantlet has a simulated canvas cover and the cannon is made of solid diecast metal. The hull is constructed of plastic, with separately-applied equipment storage boxes, tow cables and spare track. The lever arms of the torsion bar suspension can be seen on the model's underside.
