Morozov T-55 Diecast Model
Soviet Army, Prague, Czechoslovakia, 1968

Morozov T-55   5"   2"

In January of 1968 Alexander Dubcek became the leader of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. His predeccors had slowly started mild reforms but Dubcek wanted to speed them up and suggested that the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (CSSR) reach mature socialism using its own method rather than follow the Soviet Union's. This displeased the Soviets as it gave more rights to the people so after failed negotiations between the two countries the Soviet Union's military and its Warsaw Pact allies invaded. On the night of August 20 - 21, 1968 200,000 Warsaw Pact troops and 2,000 tanks that included many T-55's invaded Czechoslavakia. 72 Czechoslovaks were killed and hundreds wounded. In April 1969 Dubcek was replaced with someone more sympathetic towards the Soviets. Eventually all Warsaw Pacts troops were withdrawn from the country.

The T-55 was essentially an improved T-54 and began to enter service in 1959. Some of the improvements were a more powerful V-12 diesel engine, an inproved transmission, a rotating turret floor and the eliminnation of the Loader's cupola. The T-55 had the 12.7mm anti-aircraft turret machine gun and the 7.62mm machine gun in the bow plate eliminated. The removal of the 7.62mm machine gun made room for more room to carry ammunition for the main gun. Later versions of the T-55 had the 12.7mm machine reinstalled. The T-55A also had an anti-radiation lining added. The T-54/55 were manufactured in the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia and China. Almost 50 countries have the T-55 in their arsenal and many modernization packages are available that will keep this tank in action for years to come.

Morozov T-55

Designed as a descendant of the Soviet Union's famous T-34 medium tank, the T-55 series of main battle tanks first entered service in 1959. This tank has a fully tracked, five-road-wheeled chassis with no space between the first and second road wheels and no return rollers. It combines a high-velocity gun, a highly mobile chassis, a low silhouette and exceptional long-range endurance. It can ford depths of 1.4 meters without preparation and 5.5 meters with snorkel equipment. Used by some 47 other nations on both sides of the Iron Curtain, the T-55 saw use with Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces.

Hobby Master's 1:72 scale T-55 is constructed with an intelligent mix of diecast metal and plastic, which gives this model maximum scale replication. One of the highlights of this T-55 is an extraordinarily detailed turret, which is constructed of diecast metal combined with plastic components such as the separately-applied commander and gunner's hatches with scale rivets and hinges, the floodlights and the DShk 108mm heavy machine gun. The mantlet has a simulated canvas cover and the cannon is made of solid diecast metal. The hull is constructed of plastic, with separately-applied equipment storage boxes, tow cables and spare track. The lever arms of the torsion bar suspension can be seen on the model's underside.
