In August 1946 this aircraft was a DC-4-1009 c/n 43067-63 manufactured for Trans Australia Airlines as VH-TAC and named "John Forrest". Twenty months later the plane was sold to British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines as VH-BPA and named "Adventure". On February 15, 1949 the plane sold to QANTAS Empire Airways Ltd. as VH-EBL named "Hong Kong Trader". January 13, 1961 it sold to Ansett-ANA as VH-INY and later Leased to McRobertson Miller Airlines. This aircraft was owned and/or operated by all four Australian airlines before being scrapped in South Africa in January 1979.
Designed to meet a United Airlines requirement for a long-range passenger airliner, the Douglas DC-4 was first flown on June 7, 1938. The prototype was a very ambitious four-engined, pressurized aircraft that was three times the size of its predecessor, the DC-3-a design that proved far too expensive and difficult for civilian airlines to maintain. Douglas revised the design, but by the time it was complete WWII was well underway and development of the aircraft was channeled to the US military. Post-war, the DC-4 became a popular and reliable airliner with major carriers such as National and Northwest Airlines. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
