Buffalo Airways was founded in 1970 by Joe McBryan (Buffalo Joe). It’s a family run operation with 3 locations; Hay River and Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territories and Red Deer, Alberta. Buffalo operates scheduled services for passenger, cargo as well as charters, firefighting, aerial spraying, courier service and an aircraft maintenance engineer program. Buffalo operated 13 Douglas C-54 Skymasters as well as 16 other types of aircraft. The company is the subject of a reality series called “Ice Pilots NWT” in Canada and just “Ice Pilots” in the U.S. and the UK.
Designed to meet a United Airlines requirement for a long-range passenger airliner, the Douglas DC-4 was first flown on June 7, 1938. The prototype was a very ambitious four-engined, pressurized aircraft that was three times the size of its predecessor, the DC-3-a design that proved far too expensive and difficult for civilian airlines to maintain. Douglas revised the design, but by the time it was complete WWII was well underway and development of the aircraft was channeled to the US military.
