The RAF was replacing their Gnat and two-seater Hawker Hunters with the Hawker Siddeley model 1182 that the RAF named the Hawk. The first Hawk T1 was delivered in 1976 just prior to Hawker Siddeley and other companies merging to form British Aerospace in 1977. In a later merger with Marconi Electronic Systems, BA would become BAE Systems. A total of 176 Hawk T1s were produced for the RAF. Hawk T1 XX289 was received in October 1979 and converted to a T1A in 1984 and transferred to 100 Squadron 1995. Designed to meet an RAF requirement for a fast trainer to replace the Folland Gnat, the BaE Hawk first flew on August 21, 1974. This tandem two-seat aircraft has a distinctive appearance, with the front seat positioned below the rear seat so that the instructor has a clear view of the student's cockpit. The Hawk is subsonic in level flight but can achieve Mach 1.15 in a dive, giving trainees the experience of supersonic flight. Hawks are expensive to produce but durable and maneuverable enough to be used for combat.
